Seascape sandblast by the seashore

So this weekend was full of creativity, stress, sandblasting, octopus, bull kelp and jelly fish… I was commissioned to sandblast a ‘Sea’ themed mirror measuring 34″ x 62″  for a 135 foot freight boat here in town.  The parameters were set and I went to work on the design.
I then coerced my very good friend Amanda Parker, a talented glass artist as well to help me draw and cut the resist.  Hours were spent together with pencils, erasers, and vinyl cutters.   Our fingers were sore, our eyes burned but we got it done.
Saturday could not have been a better day to sandblast outside, the sun was shining and it was warm.  There was little to no wind, and the blasting was a success.

We did the blasting in three stages, first blast was the deepest and with a coarse sand.  The second blast was finished with the soft sand.  And the last was using the soft sand with just a light pass.
It was great experience accepting this commission, I love the ocean themes and didn’t find the design part difficult and had fun with the planning.  My nerves were present tho during the initial blasting part, the mirror was huge and not easy to get around.  The one thing I will say, next time there will be no packing tape used as part of the resist! Goo be gone was not as good as I had hoped for! Anyway, a huge thanks to my friend Parker, my business partner… mom, and to my dad for building me the brace to move it around with.
